Web 2.0 Summit…Valuable Links

Well, today at the Web 2.0 Summit was pretty awesome as well. I won’t bother listing out the speakers today, but I will say that Carol Bartz, CEO of Yahoo, and Mark Zuckerburg, CEO of Facebook, were fabulous. Carol has some great insight, confidence and direction for Yahoo. Mark, well, its hard to believe he’s only 26. He was on stage holding his own with both Tim O’Reilley and John Batelle and maybe giving a little back. Honestly, I felt very challenged to go back to the office and deliver something great for our…after all…this 26 year old guy did and he started it when he was in his early 20s. Wow.

Highlights from the Day

Mary Meeker had to be one of the highlights of conference so far. Her material was amazing so here’s a link – Mary Meekers Presentation

Carol Bartz was fun to watch. She’s a tremendously confident woman and rightly so. She’s got some bold vision for Yahoo and it seems they are on track.

Yuri Milner is a Russian Venture Capitalist. He was very impressive. The first time I’ve seen him, but you can tell he’s brilliant. Are all Russians so quiet and calculating? Read more about him if you can find anything.

We all know about Zappos and Tony Hsieh. They’ve got a great story, but have you heard of Gilt Group? How’s this. They started in 2007. In 2009 they made over $170 million. In 2010, they’re tracking for over $400 million. Members only shopping discounts for luxury brands.

Mobile My biggest takeaway from today was mobile. Yeah, we all know its a big deal. Fundamentally, today took what I thought was a big deal and totally reshaped it in a big way. One stat that floored me…a website in Japan shifted from 25% of its page views being over mobile to 84%…in just 4 years. They didn’t try to do it, but it happened. You better be ready. We better be ready.

Other mobile stats included things like there are 600 mobile devices in India, but 300 million people don’t have access to toilets. There were all sorts of crazy mobile growth stat numbers being quoted. It’ll be interesting to see what plays out in this crazy space in the years to come.
